Originally erected at Coulport by the amateur engineer John Kibble as a private conservatory and events hall, the structure was taken down and rebuilt in 1873 in Glasgow Botanic Gardens, enlarged with a great central dome. It hosted public meetings of several thousand people and the installation of Glasgow University rectors, including Disraeli in 1873 and Gladstone in 1879. Closed in 2003 for a full restoration carried out off-site over three years, it reopened on 30 November 2006. It holds a collection of tree ferns planted in the 1880s, now recognised as a national collection.
