History

The Iwaki City Flower Center opened on 28 April 1975, a date given both by the Wikidata entry and by the Japanese encyclopedia, which places it on the slopes of Mount Ishimori, about six kilometres north-east of Iwaki Station. The site, about 26 hectares, was laid out as a park of flowers and exhibitions: the encyclopedia describes exhibitions, seasonal events, courses on plants and art, and power facilities (wind turbines and solar panels). The centre's brochure, published in 2020, states that the park is run by a company designated by the city. The greenhouse appears only as one facility among others, with no history of its own. A request to the operator or to the municipal archives would be needed to date it.

Architecture and engineering

The photographs published by the centre show a greenhouse whose roof is a glazed vault on a metal framework. In the widest photograph, the arches of the structure form a regular series of ribs, and the glazing is divided into panels. The floor is paved with pale bricks, and the path winds between beds edged with low walls of grey stone. In another photograph, potted cacti and succulent plants stand on stones and in containers. The 2020 brochure places the greenhouse near the restaurant house (レストハウス) and the rose gardens, in the central part of the park.

Plant collections

The official text on the greenhouse describes tropical and succulent plants: cacti, hibiscus and flowering trees of warm countries. The andtrip travel article names bougainvillea, cacti and hibiscus, together with banana plants, papayas and pitaya (dragon fruit), in a tropical zone of the greenhouse. The 2020 brochure lists hibiscus, bougainvillea and banana plants as visible all year. The Iwaki tourist association notice adds that succulent plants and southern flowering trees can be enjoyed throughout the year.

Visiting

The greenhouse is visited inside the park, near the restaurant house (レストハウス) and the rose gardens. The park, about 26 hectares, has other areas: the Flower Life hall (フラワーライフ館), used for exhibitions and training, a camellia grove (ツバキの森), a rhododendron garden (シャクナゲ園), a plum orchard (梅林), an English garden, and renewable energy installations (wind and solar). From the Iwaki-Chūō interchange the centre is about thirty minutes by car, and from Iwaki Station about twenty minutes by taxi, according to the 2020 brochure. A visit to the greenhouse can therefore be combined with the other gardens. The sources do not recommend a particular season for the greenhouse, which shows plants throughout the year.
