Built between 1889 and 1891 by the Belgian-born landscape architect Louis Fuchs, the Sera Veche at the Bucharest Botanical Garden was directly inspired by the greenhouses of the Belgian city of Liège, whose original model was destroyed in the bombing of 1944. Used as an exhibition greenhouse until 1976, it suffered nearby bomb strikes in April 1944 that shattered every one of its panes. Closed for 35 years, it partially reopened in 2011 as a historic monument after a rehabilitation carried out between 2008 and 2014 with Swiss support; its central pavilion still shelters a Podocarpus neriifolius more than 120 years old.
