History

The Jardim Botânico Irmãos Villas-Bôas opened on 15 March 2014 in Sorocaba, in the Jardim Dois Corações district. The city describes it as a permanent protection area of about 70,000 m², where the vegetation passes from Cerrado to Atlantic Forest; its stated purposes are protecting local and regional flora, leisure, culture, university research and environmental education. The Portuguese Wikipedia gives an area of 220,000 m², a figure the city does not use. The garden is named after the Villas-Bôas brothers.

The Palacete de Cristal is its main building. According to the city, its constructional references are the crystal palaces of London, Petrópolis (Rio de Janeiro State) and Curitiba (Paraná); Wikipedia describes it as inspired by the botanical gardens of Curitiba and Petrópolis.

The building hosts exhibitions and events: in 2024, sculptures, vases and paintings by Victor Brecheret Filho; in 2026, the exhibition "Entrelaços", which combines art, technology and sustainability. The city also lights it in the colours of public-health campaigns, for example for Outubro Rosa in 2022.

In March 2023 it was closed to visitors for about twenty days so that the mezzanine panels, damaged for years, could be replaced. The work was funded by the company MRV Engenharia under an environmental-restoration agreement with the municipal environment secretariat. The same administration lists full maintenance of the palacete's gutters, with painting of the interior space as the next step.

Architecture and engineering

The Palacete de Cristal is a glass building on a metal structure covering 500 m², according to the city and to a 2020 travel guide. Its references are the crystal palaces of London, Petrópolis and Curitiba, three landmarks of iron-and-glass architecture.

Inside, a mezzanine, a viewing walkway above the interior beds and a lift for visitors with reduced mobility allow the volume to be explored, according to the same guide.

Photographs published on Wikimedia Commons show a white, multi-part building: low wings under pale roofs, a raised central block topped by a small lantern, a rounded projecting bay with a domed roof, and glazed walls running from floor to cornice, divided by slender mullions and capped by semicircular fanlights. Inside, the floor is tiled and a tiered fountain stands near a large bay that looks out over the city.

Plant collections

According to the city, the Palacete houses indoor gardens with plants from the Cerrado, tropical forest, arid habitats and a Japanese garden. A 2020 travel guide speaks of ornamental botanical collections.

The garden manages other collections. Its collection of Brazilian trees, planted since 2014, represents every region of the country, with rubber trees, araucarias, jequitibás, ipês and pau-brasil among them. A collection of about sixty bamboo species, native and exotic, joined the garden in 2019 and stands in an outside area in the Quintais do Imperador district. The orchid house was built from demolition bricks, reused metal parts and bamboo; a sensory garden of medicinal plants, a sun-shaped rose labyrinth with twelve rays (twenty-nine rose varieties according to the 2020 guide) and the Jardim das Xerófitas, devoted to cacti and succulents, complete the picture. The last, with about 1,300 plants, was due to be inaugurated on 29 March 2025 according to the city's programme.

Visiting

The Palacete stands in the garden, in the Jardim Dois Corações district, close to the Parque das Águas according to a travel guide. The building hosts exhibitions, workshops and meetings; the city's news site publishes the programme. The garden celebrates its anniversary on 15 March, with a programme of activities spread over the month: in 2025, among others, an orchid workshop with the Sorocaba orchid society.

Allow an hour or two for the building and the nearby paths, longer with the lakes, viewpoints and trails. Other green spaces in the city, listed by the same guide, combine well with a visit: the Chico Mendes natural park and the Quinzinho de Barros municipal zoo.
