Estufa das Bromélias Roberto Burle Marx

Within the Jardim Botânico do Rio de Janeiro, founded in 1808 and today designated a UNESCO biosphere reserve, this greenhouse is dedicated to Roberto Burle Marx, a major figure of Brazilian landscape design and a great champion of the ornamental use of tropical bromeliads. It holds about 1,700 specimens native to the Amazon and the Atlantic Forest, alongside other historic greenhouses in the garden devoted to orchids, carnivorous plants and cacti. The exact construction date of this particular greenhouse is not clearly documented in the sources consulted, unlike the neighboring Orquidário, restored in 1998. It nonetheless testifies to the importance the Rio botanical garden places on conserving Brazilian tropical flora under cover, within a larger complex of several themed estufas (greenhouses).
