Opened in December 2010 in Villa-Lobos Park, a large green space in western São Paulo laid out by Decio Tozzi over former waste and rubble dumps, the orchid house is named after the anthropologist Ruth Cardoso. Tozzi conceived it as an oca, the ancestral shelter of Brazil's Indigenous peoples: a concrete arch and a series of curved metal frames carry a transparent dome over a partly sunken floor. Closed in 2015, it reopened in early 2026 after works costing about 2 million reais and displays 27 orchid species among more than 50 plant species.

In depth

History

1 min

Villa-Lobos Park, opened at the end of 1994 in the Alto de Pinheiros district, is the work of the architect Decio Tozzi. It was laid out on unpromising ground: a waste dump belonging to CEAGESP, São Paulo's large wholesale market, to the west, a deposit of material dredged from the Pinheiros river to the east and construction rubble in the middle.

In December 2010 the park gained the Ruth Cardoso orchid house, also designed by Tozzi and named in tribute to the anthropologist and university professor recognised for her work in culture, education and social development. The building closed as early as 2015, however, and remained shut for about a decade.

Since 2022 the park has been run under concession by the company Reserva Parques. The orchid house then underwent a restoration costing about 2 million reais, devoted to repairing the structure and improving the visitor experience. The public returned in early February 2026, ahead of an official ceremony announced for 3 March. The building now presents itself as a place of contemplation and learning devoted to the preservation, cultivation and display of orchids.

Architecture and engineering

1 min

Decio Tozzi conceived the orchid house as an oca, the traditional shelter of Brazil's Indigenous peoples, so that the building would echo these ancestral dwellings and sit easily in the park landscape. The structure rests on a concrete arch answered by a sequence of curved metal frames; together they carry a transparent dome that lights the interior with daylight alone. The arch also divides the space into two levels.

The floor is partly sunk below the surrounding ground, which shields the plants from gusts of wind. Humidity is kept up by two reflecting pools, one inside and one outside, while a natural ventilation system refreshes the air. The sources consulted describe the covering sometimes as glazed and sometimes simply as transparent; none gives the floor area or exact dimensions of the building.

Plant collections

1 min

The collection comprises 27 orchid species, shown among more than 50 species of other plants, many of them native. The orchids include Cattleya labiata, nicknamed the queen of orchids, Laelia purpurata, Phalaenopsis and the hybrid Oncidium Sharry Baby, known locally as the chocolate orchid. One hybrid bears the name of the building's dedicatee: Rhyncholaeliocattleya Professora Ruth Cardoso.

The rest of the planting evokes the Brazilian flora, with the pau-brasil, the tree that gave the country its name, the imperial bromeliad (bromélia-imperial) and the fern known as samambaia-estaca. Monthly workshops led by specialists cover the cultivation, care and conservation of orchids.

Visiting

1 min

The orchid house stands in Villa-Lobos Park in the west of São Paulo, at the park's address, 2001 Avenida Professor Fonseca Rodrigues. Seeing the building itself takes half an hour to an hour, and the visit extends naturally into a walk through the park, which covers more than 70 hectares and ranks among the city's major green spaces.

The monthly orchid workshops, whose dates depend on the specialists involved, are the best opportunity for an in-depth visit. A small café now completes the facilities.
