- Working bank head office; the first-floor water garden, with Kenji Imai's relief, is open to all (October 2026)
Completed in 2017 in Osaka, the head office of Osaka Shoko Shinkin Bank has twelve storeys above ground. On a trapezoidal site, Tadao Ando combines a triangular upper part with a rectangular base. Kenji Imai's large mosaic relief, which once crowned the roof of the previous building, was remade with 3D techniques and set on the first-floor water garden.
History
The head office stands on the site of an older building, on whose roof the architect Kenji Imai (今井兼次) had made a large relief, "The Fantasy of the Spinning Wheel" (糸車の幻想), using the process he called "phoenix mosaic": about 12 m high and 18 m wide, and more than 2.5 m deep. For the new building, designed by Tadao Ando and completed in 2017, the work was remade with the latest techniques; only a few fragments of the original remain.
The building is part of the Osaka Selection of the city's "Living Architecture Museum" festival.
Architecture
The building has twelve storeys above ground and stands about 60 m high. On a trapezoidal site, it combines a triangular upper part with a lower rectangular base. The base-isolated structure rests, for the triangular plan, on a three-dimensional mega-truss developed for the purpose, with CFT columns (concrete-filled steel tubes); it received the CFT structural award for fiscal 2018. Takenaka, which built the tower, designed its structure and services.
Kenji Imai's relief, reconstructed with 3D techniques, was set in the low part of the building, on the first-floor water garden, where anyone can approach it.
Use today
The building houses the bank's head office and offices.
Visiting
It is a working bank building: the relief can be seen from the first-floor water garden, which is open to all.
