Demolished in 1991 to make way for Atelier in Oyodo II

In 1981 Tadao Ando converted into his office the small Tomishima House, which he had designed in 1973 and later bought. He extended it in 1982 and again in 1986, onto the neighbouring plot and upwards: these successive additions produced a discontinuous, labyrinthine space, far from any functional rationality. Everything was demolished in 1991 to make way for the present studio.

History

Tadao Ando had designed Tomishima House (富島邸), completed in 1973. He later bought the property to set up his office there: this was Atelier in Oyodo I, fitted out in 1981, then extended in 1982 and in 1986. In 1991 everything was demolished, and Atelier in Oyodo II was built in its place.

Architecture

The original three-level house stood on a narrow 47 m2 plot. Ando extended it onto the neighbouring land and added height. Because these additions were made in phases, the atelier formed a fragmented, labyrinthine space, a long way from any functional rationality.
