This municipal hot-spring bathhouse in Takarazuka, designed by Tadao Ando, raises five storeys of exposed concrete in the heart of the town, overlooking the Mukogawa river. The day-use bath brought together two waters, one reddish-brown and rich in iron, the other clear. The city closed it temporarily in 2026 because its equipment was ageing, and is preparing its renovation.
History
Takarazuka is an old spa town: a Kamakura-period poet composed a poem there while visiting its baths, and a stone monument traces the origin of the spring to the reign of Emperor Ōjin. Tadao Ando's building was completed in November 2001. It opened on 30 January 2002 under another name, run by a joint public-private company that went bankrupt in June 2003; the facility closed, then reopened in September 2004 as Nature Spa Takarazuka, a public facility entrusted to a private operator.
Because its air-conditioning and equipment were ageing, the city closed it temporarily on 1 July 2026. It intends to keep the existing building to carry on Takarazuka's hot-spring culture, and is preparing its renovation.
Architecture
The building has five storeys above ground and one basement. Its exposed-concrete exterior is its defining feature. Although it stands in the heart of the town, it looks down on the Mukogawa river and out to the mountains.
Use today
Until its closure it was a day-use hot-spring bathhouse: a single admission gave access to both waters, the reddish-brown, iron-rich one and the clear one. It also offered beauty treatments, heated stone baths and fitness facilities.
Visiting
The building stands a few minutes' walk from Takarazuka's JR and Hankyū stations.
