History

The Satsukiyama Ryokuchi botanical garden is a municipal facility of Ikeda, laid out on 5.3 hectares of a slope along the Sugigatani stream, at the foot of Mount Satsuki, in the Satsukiyama area that also holds the zoo, a gymnasium and the Ikeda Castle ruins park. According to Japanese Wikipedia, which relies on the municipal bulletins of the time, the project for an urban greenery botanical garden began in 1981; construction of the "Green Center" (緑のセンター) started on 8 January 1987 and the building opened on 1 October 1987.

The greenhouse came next: works began in September 1988, east of the Green Center; the Rest Flower Hall (レストフラワーホール) was completed on 28 April 1989, and the garden opened on 12 May 1989. Management is now entrusted to a joint venture, Satsukiyama Park Management, appointed by the city; Wikipedia mentions a municipal facilities-management foundation earlier. The operator's website publishes a programme of shows and classes, and a gardening advice service runs at the Green Center.

Architecture and engineering

The Rest Flower Hall is a single-storey building on a steel frame, 227 m² in all, with a room called reion-shitsu (冷温室) and an entrance lobby attached, according to Japanese Wikipedia, which cites the 1988 municipal bulletin. The OpenStreetMap outline of a horticultural greenhouse next to the Green Center, about 236 m², matches that area.

In a photograph on the blog "Ikeda Machikado Saihakken" from April 2012, the greenhouse appears as glass on a slender white metal frame, with a rounded glazed roofline, built on a terraced slope reached by a stair. The neighbouring Green Center, of reinforced concrete on two floors, about 390 m², holds an exhibition gallery, an office, a meeting room, a reference room and a wild-plant garden on its roof terrace.

Plant collections

The Ikeda tourist association writes that rare flowers bloom in profusion in the greenhouse and that the flowers of each season can be seen; the city's page names the greenhouse first, before the themed gardens. A blogger in April 2012 saw a large variety of flowers, a mango tree bearing small fruit and a plant whose buds grow on the leaf edge; in front of the greenhouse a seasonal bed was flowering with hellebores, which the blogger calls "Christmas roses".

The garden also includes, according to Japanese Wikipedia, an azalea and satsuki rhododendron garden, a fragrant-tree garden, a hydrangea garden and a fruit-tree garden. The same blogger notes a cherry tree beside the entrance gate, very beautiful in full bloom.

Visiting

The garden lies at the foot of Mount Satsuki, about 1.4 km north-east of Ikeda station (Hankyū Takarazuka line); the "Satsukigaoka-shōgakkō-mae" bus stop is a one-minute walk away. Around it, according to Japanese Wikipedia, are Satsukiyama Zoo at 600 m, the Ikeda Castle ruins park at 600 m and the Kobayashi Ichizō museum at 500 m, which allows several visits to be combined in the same area.

The Ikeda tourist association mentions workshops (moss terrariums by reservation for groups, small craft sessions for children) and the operator's website publishes the 2026 programme of shows and classes. The greenhouse itself is small: it suits a short visit, as part of a walk at the foot of the mountain.
