History
The garden that holds the glasshouse grew out of a small school garden. German Wikipedia has the botanical garden developing as early as 1928, the English version speaks of 1927-1928, and the city's website gives 1929 for its opening as a botanical garden. It now covers 3.6 hectares in Oppum and holds, according to the city, about 5,000 plant species; German Wikipedia cites the same order of magnitude with a date of 2008.
The Schaugewächshaus dates from 1996 according to the city's website, the only source to date it. German Wikipedia says the cacti are housed in "a large Gewächshaus", opened to the public on the first Sunday of each month from May to October, where members of the Krefelder Kakteenfreunde, who supplied most of the plants, answer visitors' questions. The Sundays the city has announced for 2026, 6 September and 4 October, are first Sundays of the month.

Architecture and engineering
The city gives 128 m² for this glasshouse built in 1996. Photographs on Wikimedia Commons show its outline: a metal frame, clear panes on the main faces and, seen from inside, some translucent ribbed wall panels.
Inside, a paved path curves between raised beds laid with rocks, and labels accompany the plants. A bed of hardy succulents, which German Wikipedia places outdoors, lies in front of the facade in the photographs.

Plant collections
The city's website lists three groups: cacti and other succulents, the flora of the Canary Islands and Mediterranean plants. Photographs on Commons illustrate them: columnar and globular cacti, rosette plants. English Wikipedia adds carnivorous plants and orchids in the garden's glasshouses.
Most of the cacti come from the Krefelder Kakteenfreunde, according to German Wikipedia, which also cites rare cacti, carnivorous plants, orchids and bog and aquatic plants in the garden. The rest of the site has a Niederrheinischer Bauerngarten, an Apothekergarten, a rose garden of about 150 varieties, a systematic section and an alpine garden.

Visiting
The garden lies in Oppum, on the edge of the Schönwasserpark, and entry is free apart from a few events. The glasshouse is a single room: the stop is short and combines with a stroll through the flower beds, the rose garden, the medicinal garden and the alpine garden. It is open on weekdays, whereas the outdoor garden is open daily from mid-March to October; at weekends it opens only on dates announced by the city. On Sundays in good weather a mobile cafeteria runs in the garden. The Regenwaldhaus of Krefeld Zoo, already listed on this site, lies about 800 m away as the crow flies.
