Mitchell Park Horticultural Conservatory (The Domes)

Built between 1964 and 1967 to the plans of local architect Donald L. Grieb, winner of a competition launched in 1955, Mitchell Park's three domes replaced an aging Victorian greenhouse. Their beehive-shaped conoidal form, built of reinforced glass on an aluminum frame, houses in turn a seasonal floral garden, a rainforest and a desert. The complex, affectionately nicknamed "The Domes" by locals, is a recognized landmark of modernist American architecture and appears on the National Trust for Historic Preservation's watch list. Its aging structure has for several years been the subject of a broad public debate over restoration versus replacement, a debate still ongoing in 2026.
