Built to mark the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney's bicentennial, The Calyx replaces the former Tropical Centre while incorporating the 1987 Arc glasshouse designed by Ken Woolley. Rather than a classic dome, architects PTW designed a circular colonnade of slender white columns leaning inward, creating shifting plays of transparency between building and vegetation. The space houses a spectacular living wall and hosts themed horticultural exhibitions renewed every year, often centered on conservation issues.
