History

Harima Heliport stood in Harima Science Garden City (播磨科学公園都市), in Kamigori. Operated by Hyōgo Prefecture, it was the prefecture's second public heliport, after the one in Kobe. Work began in September 1988 and the heliport was completed in July 1989: it could receive helicopters of up to 9 tonnes, on a 1.6 ha site with a 35 m by 20 m pad and aprons for three aircraft. It opened on 27 November 1989.

The management building, designed by Tadao Ando, was completed in July 1990. The heliport closed on 25 September 2008.

Architecture

The management building has two levels and about 200 m² of floor area; it is distinguished by a cylindrical, entirely glazed observation room. It housed, among other things, the control tower and the waiting room.

The heliport occupied a height overlooking the science city.

Use today

A passenger service linked Harima to Kobe Heliport from 18 May 1994 to 31 March 2002. Since the closure in 2008 the site has served as a football ground.
