Opened in April 2005 on Cat Street in Harajuku, hhstyle.com/casa was the third shop of an importer of designer furniture. Tadao Ando designed it as a building covered in black steel plates, for a client who wanted an architecture unlike his earlier works. The building later housed a Nike store and, since 2024, a Coach store.

History

The hhstyle.com/casa store opened in April 2005 along Cat Street in Harajuku. It was the third shop of an importer of designer furniture, whose main store, a glass building by Kazuyo Sejima, stood two doors away on the same street. The company's chairman asked Ando for an architecture without precedent, unlike his earlier works and unlike the main store. The plot, of about 330 m2, came with constraints: the street in front was due to be widened, so the part of the building concerned had to be easy to take down, and the plot straddled two leased sites, one leased for ten years, the other for five.

The shop first sold ARMANI/CASA furniture and Boffi kitchens and bathrooms. In June 2006 it was refitted to become in effect an ARMANI/CASA shop, with a by-appointment space on the top floor that could be booked even outside opening hours. In 2008 a Nike store, the NSW Store, moved into the building; since February 2024 it has housed the Coach Play @ Cat Street store.

Architecture

The building is clad in black steel plates.
