Built for the centenary of the Sacred Heart School in Tokyo, this multipurpose hall by Ando fits into the narrow space left between gymnasiums, as an extension of an indoor pool from the 1960s. A foyer looks onto the trees, the old buildings and the chapel of the campus, and a circular hall sits on the third level. It was completed in 2008.

History

The hall was designed by Tadao Ando to mark the centenary of the Sacred Heart School in Tokyo (聖心女子学院), a private school located in Shirokane. Completed in 2008, it is one of the projects that marked the anniversary, and the school named it Duchesne Hall.

Architecture

The building stands in a quiet residential district. It was slipped into the little space available between existing gymnasiums, as an extension of an indoor pool built in the 1960s. The foyer draws the campus trees, its old buildings and its chapel into the view. A circular hall occupies the third level, and the first two levels contain small classrooms.

Use today

It is a multipurpose hall, which the school uses as a place to pray, study and reflect together.

Visiting

The hall is part of the campus of a working school and is not open to visitors.
