Completed in 1985 on Port Island, in Kobe, this L-shaped building belonged to the clothing brand JUN. It combined offices, shops, a warehouse and a hall, and was one of the central elements of Kobe's "Fashion Town". Unused for a long time, it is to be demolished: the property group that acquired the land announced in August 2026 that it would build a new centre there.
History
The building was completed in November 1985; Tadao Ando's office designed it.
The City of Kobe had planned the "Fashion Town" on the site of the Portopia 81 exposition, on Port Island, to gather clothing companies; the building was one of its central elements. It belonged to the clothing brand JUN.
A group active in property and the construction of rental housing acquired the land in December 2024. On 27 August 2026 it announced that it would create an information centre for western Japan there, devoted to housing, daily life, urban development and the environment. It had studied reusing the building, given its architectural value and history; but after surveys of the building and structural checks, ageing, earthquake resistance, long-term safety and upkeep led it to decide on demolition.
Architecture
The building is laid out as an L. Seen from outside, it sits in harmony with the greenery around it.
Use today
The building has not been in use for a long time; the logo of the JUN brand is still on its walls.
Visiting
The site is closed off with cones: one cannot enter, but the building can be seen from outside. It stands near a station of the Port Liner line, behind the UCC Coffee Museum and a science museum for young people.
