History

Founded in 1983, the NIWAKA jewellery house moved its flagship store and head office in 2009 into a new building designed by Tadao Ando's office, in central Kyoto, near the crossing of Tominokōji and Sanjō streets.

Architecture

It is a fair-faced concrete building, which its owner presents as an innovative piece of contemporary architecture in harmony with Kyoto's traditional streets.

Use today

The building houses NIWAKA's head office and, upstairs, its main Kyoto store.

Visiting

The store is on the first floor. It opens from 11:00 to 20:00, with irregular closing days and a closure over the New Year holidays; booking a visit on the NIWAKA website avoids waiting.
