Designed in 1973, when Tadao Ando was starting out, this three-storey house stood on a narrow plot in Osaka next to a pre-war wooden tenement. The architect later bought it to house his office, altered and extended it several times, then demolished everything in 1991 to rebuild on the same site.

History

Tadao Ando designed this house in 1973, when he was still a young architect. The clients, whose family had grown with the birth of twins, found it too small and raised the matter with him; he then bought the house and made it his workplace.

Designed as a home, it suited an office poorly, all the more as the team kept growing. Ando therefore altered and extended it many times (Atelier in Oyodo I), before demolishing everything in 1991 and designing a new building, Atelier in Oyodo II, which now stands on the site.

Architecture

It was a small three-storey house, built for a family of four on a narrow plot in downtown Osaka, next to a pre-war wooden tenement.

Visiting

The house no longer exists; the studio that replaced it houses Tadao Ando's practice.
