« Funded by the proceeds of an exhibition, a century before their restoration. »
Funded by the proceeds of an industrial exhibition held on the same site in 1913-1914, the Wintergardens pair an unheated temperate house, opened in 1921, with a tropical house kept at 28°C, completed in 1928. Architects Gummer and Ford, influenced by the British Arts & Crafts movement, designed a symmetrical complex around a central fernery. Listed as a historic place, the gardens underwent a NZ$5.6 million restoration between 2021 and 2023.
