Funded by philanthropist Robert Glendining, this winter garden opened on October 3, 1908, from initial plans prepared by the Scottish greenhouse firm McKenzie & Moncur under the supervision of garden curator David Tannock. It is the very first winter garden built in Australasia, a milestone in the region's horticultural history. The complex later expanded to nine specialized sections: glasshouses, a palm house, a tropical house, a waterlily pond, orchids, a fernery and succulents; restored in 1992 and renovated again in 2019, it still holds a five-star rating from the New Zealand Gardens Trust.
