Opened on 28 January 1928 in Pukekura Park, this fernery was modelled on a private fernery belonging to a Hawera resident. Work began in 1926 and was funded by public subscription for about £1,150 at the time, creating three underground chambers with walls 2.4 m thick beneath glazed roofs. At its height the site held one of the country's largest municipal orchid collections, alongside native ferns and tuberous begonias. It has been refurbished several times, notably in 1998, 2001 and 2013, and now hosts an annual festival of lights.
