On the campus of the University of Agriculture in Kraków, the Pojnarówka is a masonry building attached to an Art Nouveau greenhouse built around 1912 for the Jagiellonian University's agricultural institute, in the time of the botanist Emil Godlewski. Entered on the monuments register in 1998, the greenhouse was falling into ruin when the university rebuilt it in 2015-2016: the original cast-iron frame, restored, no longer bears the load and remains visible under a new glass roof with photovoltaic cells. A café occupies it today; the plants it holds are not inventoried.

History

The greenhouse and the neighbouring masonry building, the Pojnarówka, date from around 1912 according to the lovekrakow site, whereas Investmap describes the building as dating from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. They were built in the garden of the Collegium Agronomicum, when the botanist Emil Godlewski directed the Jagiellonian University's agricultural institute, the Studium Rolnicze. The group is entered on the monuments register; the listing dates from 1998 according to Wikidata (no. A-1084).

The works began in the summer of 2015, with funds from the Lesser Poland regional operational programme and grants from the Kraków monuments restoration committee, for more than three million zlotys. They were announced to end in March 2016; the investment database gives the third quarter of 2016.

Architecture and engineering

The reconstruction project, entrusted to the office GB.ARCH.PL, keeps the original Art Nouveau cast-iron frame but removes its load-bearing role: a new construction covers the old greenhouse, whose restored structure remains as a decorative element inside the café. The new roof is glazed with a multi-layer glass that integrates photovoltaic cells. The east and west façades receive frameless thin-film photovoltaic panels of about 50 per cent transparency, laminated into single-chamber glazing units; together they total 95 m² of panels and 5.7 kWp.

The 2015 project also planned to top the Pojnarówka with a glass construction along its whole length and to house offices, technical rooms and a server room there.

Plant collections

A photograph in the In Your Pocket guide shows, inside the café and under the dark steel-framed glass roof, a climber on the arches and ferns and potted plants, a cactus among them, along the glazed bays; guides speak of a bright interior full of greenery.

It is above all a café, which also serves as a gallery and holds ceramics or painting workshops at weekends, according to In Your Pocket.

Visiting

The Pojnarówka is at 21B Mickiewicza Avenue, behind a wall; access is through the university car park, past the guardhouse. The greenhouse is a café whose opening days and hours are best checked; visitors have coffee and cake under the glass roof, and can stop to read or attend a workshop. The place also doubles as a gallery and receives plenty of natural light, according to In Your Pocket.

The visit combines with the glasshouses of the Jagiellonian University Botanical Garden, a little over two kilometres away.
