Founded in 1880 as an exhibition garden, the Gliwice Palm House expanded in 1924 and gained a 12-metre pavilion in 1935. Destroyed during the Second World War, it reopened in October 1947 before being entirely rebuilt from 1985: the new structures were erected around the existing plantings so the collection would never be exposed to frost. It now has five climate-controlled pavilions — tropical, Mediterranean, succulent, useful plants and aquariums — holding some 8,000 specimens. Three Canary Island date palms planted in 1924 survive in the historic pavilion.
