Built between 1785 and 1788 by royal architect Dominik Merlini for King Stanisław II August, the Stara Pomarańczarnia (Old Orangery) in Łazienki Park had seventeen arched windows and two side pavilions for overwintering the court's citrus trees. Its east pavilion holds an eighteenth-century court theatre, opened on 6 September 1788, whose ceiling shows Apollo surrounded by spirits and medallions dedicated to Sophocles, Molière, Shakespeare and Racine. The building is now part of the listed Łazienki ensemble, one of Warsaw's great royal parks, and is visited as a historic monument rather than a working winter garden.
