In the centre of Nałęczów's Park Zdrojowy, the Dom Zdrojowy, completed in 1964 by the state enterprise Uzdrowisko Nałęczów, is also called the "Palmiarnia": two pavilions, one of which holds the mineral-water pump room and a palm house under a glazed facade and ceiling, added somewhat later. Palms several metres tall, some above ten, grow in this pavilion, the oldest being dated 1903.

History

The park that holds the palm house grew out of the estate of Stanisław Małachowski, who acquired the Bochotnica lands in 1751, renamed the village Nałęczów in 1772 and had a palace built there, dated 1771-1775 in Wikipedia's list of buildings. His successor Antoni Małachowski, owner from 1778, discovered medicinal springs while looking for iron ore; the creation of the spa is dated to 1817. In 1878 three physicians leased the estate to found a modern hydropathic establishment and reshaped the park with the garden planner Walerian Kronenberg. The park was entered in the register of monuments in 1957.

The present Dom Zdrojowy, which houses the mineral-water pump room, was built on the site of an old wooden pump room and completed in 1964 by the state enterprise Przedsiębiorstwo Państwowe Uzdrowisko Nałęczów, its first owner. The palm house was added "somewhat later". The palms were raised by the spa gardener Franciszek Kamiński; the oldest dates from 1903, sixty years before the building, without the sources saying where it came from, and a 2016 RMF FM report mentions palms said to be nearly a hundred years old. The building now belongs to Zakład Leczniczy Uzdrowisko Nałęczów S.A., whose website presents the palm house and pump room as attractions of the park.

Architecture and engineering

The Dom Zdrojowy consists of two pavilions: one holds the mineral-water pump room and the palm house, the other the "E. Wedel 1851" chocolate café. A 2025 travel blog describes a glazed facade and palms whose tops reach a glass ceiling; a 2016 report speaks of a glazed building serving as a pump room. On the Commons photographs the low pavilion shows large metal-framed windows under a hipped roof, and the neighbouring wing a small rotunda pierced with windows.

The interior is decorated with frescoes by Jarosław Olejnicki of Lublin. There is a fountain, taps fed by the local springs and stalls selling drinking vessels and souvenirs.

Plant collections

The palms make the place: several stand from a few metres to more than ten tall, and some are said to be nearly a hundred years old according to RMF FM (2016); the oldest is dated 1903. Wikipedia speaks of a rich collection. On the Commons photograph "Fontanna i palmy" the palms grow in large hooped wooden tubs around a hexagonal marble fountain, in front of tall windows. They were raised by the spa gardener Franciszek Kamiński.

Water is now drunk from paper cups, but the traditional long-necked spa cups, the pijałki, are still on sale. The pump room also shows a gallery of sculptures of people linked to Nałęczów, the product of a 1978 sculpture open-air.

Visiting

The palm house stands in the centre of the Park Zdrojowy, near the central pond and its island, the Wyspa Miłości, and the Bochotniczanka stream. It suits a short stop: the mineral waters are drunk there and the Wedel chocolate café occupies the neighbouring pavilion. The park invites a longer walk: the Małachowski palace (1771-1775), the "Stare Łazienki" (1816-1821) and other buildings listed by Wikipedia. It is also a launch site for hot-air balloon flights, according to the spa operator's website. Entry is paid, free for spa patients with their card according to 2025 data; opening hours differ between sources, so check before coming.
