Liberec Botanical Garden, open to the public since 1895, is the oldest of the Czech botanical gardens. A century later, between 1996 and 2000, engineer Pavel Vaněček designed a radically new complex of nine interconnected greenhouses, whose layout evokes "a crystal geode or a cluster of plant cells." Each pavilion recreates a different climate, from humid rainforests to desert environments; in 2014, an additional pavilion devoted to lotuses and tropical waterlilies completed the complex.
