Built in 1895 by architect John M. Freese, Franklin Park's Palm House drew directly on the Crystal Palace erected for the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. Open to the public from 1897, it was considerably expanded between 1989 and 1992, adding 5,400 m² of biome spaces for the AmeriFlora '92 international horticultural exposition. Now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it houses more than 400 plant species along with a permanent collection of Dale Chihuly glass artworks unique among botanical gardens.
