Completed in 1889 according to its listing and designed by T. W. Cutler, this winter garden was built for Colonel John Thomas North, who had made his fortune in the nitrate trade, beside the mansion he raised at Avery Hill in Eltham. Its three sections, crowned by glass domes including a tall central one, rest on a riveted cast-iron frame. Damaged during the Second World War, it reopened after restoration in 1962. Owned by the University of Greenwich, it holds tropical plants, camellias and a marble Galatea; one wing was closed in late 2025.

History

1 min

Born in Leeds in 1842, John Thomas North made his fortune in the sodium nitrate trade in Chile and settled in Eltham in 1882. There he built Avery Hill, a palatial house set in gardens counted among the most extensive and expensive ever created for a private house in England. The winter garden, designed by T. W. Cutler according to the London Gardens Trust inventory, is dated 1889 in its listing; the same inventory places it around 1888, and other accounts give 1890.

After North's death in 1896, the London County Council acquired the estate in July 1902 and opened a public park in 1903-04, laid out around the glasshouse and the colonel's grounds. From 1906 the house was home to a teacher training college, one of the first for women only in the United Kingdom; it merged in 1985 with Thames Polytechnic, which became the University of Greenwich in 1993.

Damaged during the Second World War, the winter garden reopened to the public after restoration in 1962; it has been listed Grade II since 8 June 1973. Neglected in the early twenty-first century, it closed temporarily for conservation work and reopened in 2010. In 2014 an activity plan was prepared for a university project to return the glasshouse and its planting to their Victorian state and to open both house and glasshouse to the public. The university left the mansion site in 2020. In December 2025 the local press described the building as in poor repair, with one wing closed, just as a planned boys' school on the mansion site, whose sale was meant to fund the restoration, was about to be dropped.

The listing describes a classical building in three sections under domed glass roofs; Pevsner saw it as a domed house flanked by a fernery and a conservatory. The single-storey central block has seven bays of red brick divided by rusticated pilasters, with twelve windows and a door on the axis, and carved brick figures and plants symbolising horticulture.

The roof combines low-pitched glazing over the outer parts with a tall central glass dome, crowned by a timber cupola with a figure of Eros as its finial. The wings also have domed glass roofs, topped by small square cupolas. Inside, the riveted cast-iron frame carries round arches on slender, quasi-Corinthian iron columns.

The east wing holds a circular pool, now ringed by a path, and a fountain whose centrepiece, Galatea Reclining on a Dolphin in white marble, rests on an oval plinth of grey marble. Pevsner called the whole "the best survival in London of such Victorian extravaganzas". The work completed in 2010 covered the guttering, windows, heating and decoration.

The London Gardens Trust describes a glasshouse well stocked with tropical trees and plants. During the 2010 works the east wing received aquatic plants around its pool, while the conservatory was replanted with camellias and exotic plants from Chile, echoing those collected by John Thomas North himself.

The planting is looked after by gardeners employed by the University of Greenwich, supported by volunteers from a Friends group. The setting also includes a major piece of sculpture: Leopoldo Ansiglioni's marble Galatea Reclining on a Dolphin, dated 1882 and surrounded by four bronze birds and a group of sea turtles. Statue and pool were cleaned and restored in 2010.

Visiting

The winter garden stands on the University of Greenwich's Avery Hill campus, at the heart of Avery Hill Park, a public park of nearly 36 hectares owned by the borough of Greenwich in south-east London. The glasshouse remains open to the public, but one wing was closed in late 2025 because of the building's poor condition, so it is worth checking beforehand which parts can be visited. The park, open at all times, has a café, a children's playground and sports facilities, and the Friends group organises volunteering around the glasshouse.
