Built in record time during the reign of Franz Joseph I, the Palmenhaus required 600 tons of wrought iron, 120 tons of cast iron, and 45,000 panes of glass. Badly damaged by bombing in February 1945, it was rebuilt piece by piece between 1948 and 1953. Today it houses three distinct climates under one roof: cool temperate, warm temperate, and humid tropical.
